Veterans Council starts scholarship fund

Stuart News - 3/21/2018

VERO BEACH -- The Veterans Council of Indian River County has moved in a new direction to help veterans' dependents with a new scholarship program.

The fund was kicked off at a special luncheon held at Indian River State College Mueller Campus. During the proceedings Indian River State College president Dr. Ed Massey was presented with a $12,000 check by Sam Kouns, president of the Veterans Council.

The contribution was to initiate a scholarship fund for IRSC students and represents donations made in the memory of Korean War veteran George Geyer, and included donations from the America Serving Veterans Foundation, the Military Officers Association of America, Vietnam Veterans of America Post 1038, Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program and Veterans Council Development funds.

Geyer, a dedicated member of the Veterans Council, had been instrumental in guiding the success of many Veterans Council programs. Pat Geyer, for whose late husband donations to the scholarship were contributed, reported that the implementation of the Veterans Council Scholarship Program started with help from the IRSC Foundation. "We have hopes of expanding even larger scholarship awards to additional colleges in the future," she said.
