State - 2/12/2024

Have you ever thought you’d like a nice, cushy job with the federal government?

There are 1,471 jobs listed in South Carolina on the USAJobs website, an official list from the federal government.

Some pay up to $400,000.

The catch for the highest paying jobs is you’ll need advanced training, as in a medical degree, and you’ll be working for the Veterans Administration’s Dorn VA Health Care System in Columbia, which according to the website cares for 82,000 veterans in the Midlands and Upstate every year, or the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System in Charleston, serving 75,000 veterans.

The Columbia location in particular is hiring for many different disciplines — from psychiatry to urology, plastic surgery to dentistry. There are dozens and dozens of openings.

“Columbia, SC is a wonderful place to live and work,” the website states. “A small-town atmosphere within a metropolitan city, known for its museums, restaurants, and the University of SC.”

The ad mentions several championship golf courses, a short drive to the mountains and the beach and a 50,000 acre lake — presumably Lake Murray — with boating and recreational opportunities.

About Charleston, the ad says “tucked along the Atlantic coastline and amid the ever-bustling Harbor, Historic Downtown Charleston is the mecca of this historic city, housing various art galleries, boutiques, and historic sites along with renowned medical centers such as the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), our academic affiliate partner.”

The website also lists a number or remote jobs for agencies such as Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, all at salaries above $140,000 annually.
